The inaugural Regional Champions Trophy was held on Saturday 17th May at the Kettering Leisure Village. All regions were represented in this new initiative which attracted teams from around the country for a fast and furious competition completed in a day!
The aim of the competition was to bring together the winners of the 9 regional leagues or competitions, and providing a route in future for strengthening the link between regional and national competition. This will hopefully provide a much needed boost for competition below National League level.
Though there was a fair sprinkling of National League players in evidence, there were teams new to a national competition – for instance, GNG Bedford, London Spikers, Loughborough Lions, Tamworth and Hawks from York.
London Spikers reached the final of the Men’s event but were unable to match Marjons, from Plymouth, in a very close two set match. Marjons ran out winners 25-21; 31-29. In the Women’s event, National Cup U18 champions, Tameside, beat Plymouth by 2 sets to one; 25-16; 21-25; 11-15. In the qualification rounds the Manchester team had eliminated the fancied London team QKX.
