Training and Competition Programme

Regional talent development sessions should coincide with the monthly National Squad training weekends that have fixed dates in the calendar (see later). The implication here is that any players selected for Junior (Girls & Boys) National team training will be committed to that squad only, following the LTAD model and putting too much time pressure on the young players. This is not to say that movement of players between regional and junior squads is unfeasible. For example, coaches may recommend that the junior national programmes invite a particular player from a regional squad to join them for a squad weekend by way of reward for hard work and progress over a period of time.

The aim is that regional squads should ultimately be training over a full weekend (4 sessions x 2hrs each) although this may be impractical in the first instance and in this case 2/3 sessions in a single day would be appropriate. All talent development squads are encouraged to develop a competition programme outside of the inter-regional championships. To this end, regions within a cluster are encouraged to arrange at least 2 triangular tournaments to be hosted at an agreed venue on the second day of every third training weekend involving both U14/U15 and U16/U17 squads. The emphasis for these competitions will be player development.
