Beach Volleyball Investment Initiative launched

If you consider the provision of beach facilities of benefit to your local community, the opportunity to register an expression of interest is now open. The deadline for applications is the 15th January 2012.

With under a year to go to the London 2012 Olympic and Paralymic Games and the exciting news that Beach Volleyball will be added as a category two sport to the Commonwealth Games, Volleyball England has launched a new initiative to increase numbers of participants and spectators in beach sports.

This initiative is in line with Volleyball England’s strategic plan, which aims to increase the number of players and non-players participating in and having high quality experiences of beach volleyball.

Volleyball England has produced “Development of Beach Volleyball Courts”, a document which details conversion and modification methods of under-used public area into sand courts in effective, economical and sustainable ways. Volleyball England aims to build 10 permanent multi court beach centres by 2013. Partner funded, local permanent beach development projects are part of an important legacy programme for the sport, aiming to:

Expose more people to beach sports as both spectators and participants

Provide opportunities for more people to follow up their initial experience and play beach volleyball regularly

Significantly improve the experience for those already playing regularly by enhancing services and reducing travel

Speaking about the project, Craig Handford, Head of Technical Development/Excel said, “This is a very exciting project for Volleyball England to be involved in. We are delighted to be able to work with our partners at Sport England to be able to offer funding to support the development of beach volleyball courts all over the country as well as in London in the lead up to the Olympic Games. These developments will be a critical element of our Go Spike campaign to drive up adult participation and we are certain that there will be a lot of interest.”

Lisa Wainwright, Chief Executive of Volleyball England, said, “Volleyball England is proud to launch this initiative, and I would like to thank Keith Nicholls, Board member of Volleyball England, for his input into the specification and design of the conversion and modification process. Beach volleyball will be one of the most popular sports at the London 2012 Olympic Games and its important we provide facilities ahead of the games, for people to experience the sport as players and spectators. The Beach Volleyball Capital Investment Initiative will provide an opportunity to involve more people in healthy lifestyles, create new visitor attractions and facilities for the local communities and support local businesses. It provides a true partnership project with a forward thinking National Governing Body in Volleyball England.”

With four sites already in operation across the UK as a result of the 2011 applications, Volleyball England is seeking new partners to increase the supply of permanent beach facilities in the UK.
