Young Achievers Award!
23rd January 2012
Volleyball England’s Lewie Lett and Alan Xu have been shortlisted for the Young Achievers Award!
The Young Achievers Trust is a vibrant and dynamic youth-led organisation that recognises, celebrates and supports inspirational young people who have made outstanding contributions in volunteering. Annually they run the Young Achievers Awards, an opportunity for exceptional young volunteers to be commended for their amazing achievements in one of four categories: the arts, sport, community, and the environment. Winners are offered a unique package of support and development opportunities that enable them to make an even greater impact in their community.
Lewie and Alan have both been successfully shortlisted for a 2011 Young Achievers Award. The Young Achievers Trust were “extremely impressed by the standard of nominations and the number of young people positively impacting on their community” and Lewie and Alan “stood out”. The next stage is for the applications of those shortlisted to be presented to a panel of judges who will decide the final winners in late January.
Lewie was Volleyball England’s Young Coach of the Year in 2011. Lewie has created an atmosphere where any performer can come and enjoy volleyball within his local club – Wessex Volleyball Club. Lewie coaches and managers the U14s boys at Wessex and the 15-18 Wessex beach sessions in the summer. He provides extra beach sessions at Boscombe in the summer so the serious players can come and train. Two pairs went on to be National Champions. As well as club coaching, Lewie has been to over 50 schools in his area to deliver Volleyball sessions. This includes schools for children with physical and learning disabilities. Lewie is dedicated to improving his coaching. He has progressed to achieve a Level 3 coaching qualification and has attended a number of Sport Coach UK workshops. He also shadows more experience national and international coaches to gain experience, techniques and practices to use. It is difficult to calculate how many young people Lewie has coached, but it is likely to be over 1000! Lewie also provides an excellent role model to younger players within the club.
Alan is a newer volunteer with Volleyball England. The first project Alan was involved in was the Birmingham V-3 (V-Inspired Volleyball Volunteers) event in October 2010 - for this a group of young people were required to plan, market and deliver a volleyball event to encourage other young people to take up the sport. He was Press and PR co-ordinator for the event and spent considerable effort designing posters and also helping on the day of the event. After this he was inspired to play volleyball and joined the University of Birmingham Volleyball Club and has been playing for one of their teams. Alan has since been involved in the Volley Squad programme and trained as a referee. He's refereed or officiated extensively at his club and was the first of the V-Inspired volunteers to complete their required log of hours. He has also been selected to volunteer at prestigious Volleyball England events, including our National Cup Finals. Alan won the Volleyball England V-Inspired Volunteer of the Year Award at our 2011 Annual Awards Evening.
