GB Sitting Squad Announced for Intercontinental Cup

Great Britain Sitting Volleyball have announced their men’s and women’s squad for the Intercontinental Cup in Cairo, Egypt from the 26th February to 10th March 2012.

A total of 16 men’s teams will compete in the Tournament, while 8 female teams will enter the respective women’s competition.

The Intercontinental Cup will provide an excellent opportunity for teams to qualify for the 2012 London Paralympics. The highest placed men’s team will earn a place at the London Games.

GB men’s team will be using the tournament to continue their preparation for London 2012 Paralympics, with the games only 208 days away. They have had a busy 8 months playing in the Continental Cup (July 2011) and the European Championships (November 2011).

The GB Women’s team will use the tournament to continue their development prior to a final decision by the British Paralympics Association (BPA) on credible performance standards for London. In November, the BPA deferred the decision to accept women team’s host country slot at the London 2012 Paralympic until March 2012.

“The women's programme was developed specifically for London 2012 but still has to prove credibility to be offered the host nation place in the Paralympic competition," explained Dan Griffin, Great Britain Sitting Volleyball Team Leader. "They are making great progress and are currently training hard for the Intercontinental Cup.”

Men’s Squad: Anton Raimondo, Apisalome Matiyavi (Mati), Asghar Nasimi, Charlie Walker, James Roberts, John Munro, Justin Phillips, Muzaffar Jabbar, Rob Richardson (Captain)

Women’s Squad: Amy Brierly, Andrea Green (Captain), Claire Harvey, Emma Wiggs, Helen Sole, Jess O’Brien, Jodi Hill, Julie Rogers, Martine Wright, Sam Bowen, Vicky Widdup

" They are making great progress and are currently training hard for the Intercontinental Cup "

Dan Griffin, Great Britain Sitting Volleyball Team Leader.
