Weekend results - National Cup & Shield

The third round of the National Cup took place this weekend, with teams looking to get one step closer to the National Cup Finals weekend in April 2013.

Here's a round up of the results:

Men’s Cup
Nottingham Rockets vs Team Northumbria 0-3 (8-25, 15-25, 9-25)
London Lynx 1 vs Tendring 3-1 (21-25, 25-15, 25-21, 25-23)
Malory Eagles (London) vs London Lynx 2 3-0 (25-17, 25-14, 25-11)
Northumbria / M’boro Academy vs Coventry & Warwick Riga 0-3 (19-25, 22-25, 15-25)
Danes Watford vs Cambridge 3-0 (25-17, 27-25, 18-25)
London Polonia vs London Docklands 3-0 (25-21, 25-17, 25-22)
SGTV Solent vs Wessex BU (to be played Wednesday 5th December)
Sheffield Hallam vs Newcastle Staffs (TBC)

The men’s results went to form, with five of the six quarter final spots up for grabs this weekend being taken by Super 8s teams. Danes Watford are currently the only team outside the Super 8s to make it through to the quarter finals as they enjoyed a convincing win over Cambridge. A tough draw awaits however, as they travel to the home of Coventry & Warwick Riga in the next round. On Wednesday, fellow division 1 team Wessex BU will attempt to join Danes in the quarters as they pit themselves against Super 8s opposition SGTV Solent.

Women’s Cup

New Forest Ladies vs Swiss Cottage 0-3 (5-25, 13-25, 21-25)
Surrey Orcas vs Wessex Rocare 1-3 (17-25, 20-25, 25-21, 19-25)
Bristol 1 vs Manchester Marvels 3-0 (25-20, 25-15, 25-17)
Loughborough Dolphins vs OVC Ladies 3-0 (25-14, 25-16, 25-14)
City of Salford VC vs London Lynx Ladies 1-3 (25-20, 19-25, 16-25, 23-25)
Malory Eagles (London) vs Ashcombe Dorking 1 3-0 (25-11, 25-18, 25-12)
Team South Wales vs Polonia IMKA London 0-3 (21-25, 13-25, 16-25)
South Birmingham Ladies vs Team Northumbria 0-3 (17-25, 21-25, 14-25)

The biggest result of the weekend across all the National Cup fixtures saw non-league London Lynx Ladies claim an unlikely win against Super 8s opposition City of Salford VC. After beating division 2 side Loughborough Students in the previous round, Lynx clearly carried their form through to round  three as they saw off a late scare to take the match in the 4th set 25-23. Their reward; a home draw against Super 8s only unbeaten side, Team Northumbria. Elsewhere, wins for both Bristol 1 and Loughborough Dolphins ensure there will be at least one Divison 1 side in the semi finals, as the two face each other in the quarter finals on 3rd February next year.

The first round of the National Shield also took place this weekend; below is a summary of results:

Men’s Shield
Dartford Volleyball Club vs Flaming Six Blackjacks 3-0 (25-13, 25-18, 25-21)
Peterborough Harriers Men vs L’boro Students 2-3 (25-15, 17-25, 25-23, 19-25, 7-15)
York VC vs Sunderland City Predators 0-3 (11-25, 15-25, 24-26)
Brentwood Estonians vs Sussex Dolphins (TBC)
Flaming Six Aces vs Wiltshire Mavericks 3-0 (25-0, 25-0, 25-0)
Stowmarket vs Maiwand VC 0-3 (0-25, 0-25, 0-25)
Norfolk Men vs Scorpions Polonia Leicester 3-0 (25-0, 25-0, 25-0)
DARKSTAR Derbyshire vs GNG Bedford (0-25, 0-25, 0-25)
OVC Mens vs Newmarket 3-0 (25-0, 25-0, 25-0)

SGTV Solent Ladies vs Tendring Ladies 0-3 (13-25, 19-25, 18-25)
