Weekend Picks - Super 8s & Division 2 North

As we approach the business end of the season the margins for promotion and survival are getting tighter – making every point matter! This weekend’s picks are set to be two thrilling encounters…

Saturday 9th February 2013

Ashcombe Dorking 1 vs. Portsmouth

In the women’s Super 8s valuable points are up for grabs in this bottom of the table clash between Ashcombe Dorking and Portsmouth.

Portsmouth earned promotion to the Super 8s last year, dropping just two games out of 16 in their season. But the team fromPortsmouthhas so far struggled with the transition in to the Super 8s and is yet to record a win against the countries top sides.

This is set to be a big game for both sides with Portsmouth looking to avoid automatic relegation. While Ashcombe will be looking to keep the pressure the City of Salford VC who sit just two points above them in the table and reach the safety of sixth place.

These two teams last met in October in a fascinating match that saw them go the five set distance. Incredibly, after losing the first two sets (25-26, 25-16), Ashcombe fought back to take the game. And with both of these teams fighting for their place in the Super 8s, you can expect nothing less than a thriller!

Ashcombe’s Head Coach, Luke Thomas commented: “This match could mean the difference between relegation and survival for both teams so I would expect nothing less than a gritty, hard fought match and I encourage all local volleyball enthusiasts to come to Dorking and see the game.

“We need to be able to assert ourselves a little more in this game and with the improved performances that we have seen throughout the season I am confident that Ashcombe are suitably equipped for this game.

“First time around we were very much a new team and still getting to know each other - I hope that by this stage we are able to see the performance improvements we have made more tangibly on the scoreboard.”

South Birmingham VC vs. Brentwood Estonians 18:30

Saturday’s one to watch in the men’s Division 2 North sees South Birmingham at home to Brentwood Estonians.

South Birmingham has so far had a mixed first half of the season having gained promotion from Division 3 North last year. The relegation battle is now well and truly on with eight points separating sixth and ninth place.

These two teams are yet to play each other in the league but the points are certainly close in the table.  But with two games in hand over their rivals, South Birmingham could really crank up the pressure on Brentwood who sit four points above them.

After suffering relegation from Division 1 Brentwood will be keen to avoid the drop this season and taking the points here will be vital – with a tough run of games ahead.

South Birmingham’s Grzegorz Bukowski commented: “At the start of the season our expectations were really high. We had strong team ready to compete on a high level.

“Unfortunately, we started current season with a bit of bad luck – injuries of our middle blockers and absence of key players. All these difficulties, however, made our will of winning stronger, which we are hoping to present during the rest of the season.

“This weekend’s game against Brentwood Estonians will be very important for both teams. The situation at the bottom of the table is still open. The aim for our team as – is to stay in Division 2. There are four clubs in a position, which is going to make the end of the season more thrilling.”
