Weekend Results: Super 8s and Division 1

As the end of the season draws closer, points are seemingly increasing in value as teams give one final push for glory or, in some cases, safety. The weekend saw nearly half of the fixtures in the top 2 divsions go the distance, as 7 of the 16 matches went to a 5th set decider.


Men’s Super 8s

In the men’s Super 8s, Team Northumria came up against a London Polonia team who were looking to bounce back from their surprise Cup semi final defeat to Wessex BU last week. They came closer than anyone this season to beating the boys from Northumbria as they pushed them all the way to a 5th set decider that only just finished in Northumbria's favour. Elsewhere, Malory Eagles (London) claimed a vital 5 set win over Sheffield Hallam as they look to secure a 2nd place finish.

Women’s Super 8s


A fierce battle at the bottom of the league has materialised over the course of the season, as Ashcombe Dorking along with newcomers City of Salford VC and Portsmouth all look to avoid relegation or the nail biting end of season playoffs. This weekend saw Portsmouth's relegation confirmed, as they lost to both City of Salford and Swiss Cottage. At the top of the table, Team Northumbria women convincingly beat Polonia IMKA London as they moved to within one game of finishing the season unbeaten.

Men’s Division 1

Promotion contenders London Docklands missed out on the chance to go within 1 point of Wessex BU with a game in hand as they lost to Birmingham who have climbed off the bottom of the table with a win at a crucial stage of the season. London Lynx 2 also took a step towards safety, upsetting the form book by beating 3rd placed Danes Watford in a close 5 set match.

Women’s Division 1

Team South Wales look hot favourites for promotion after they beat fellow promotion contenders Newcastle (Staffs) Ladies (2nd place) and Loughborough Dolphins (3rd place). It leaves them 3 points clear at the top of the table with a game in hand. The fight for the playoff spot is well and truly on, as Loughborough Dolphins find themselves 4 points behind Newcastle (Staffs) but with 2 games in hand. Tameside also have an outside chance of making the playoff as they trail by 5 with one game in hand.
