Fierce Competition at Sitting Grand Prix Series
7th December 2014
The third Sitting Grand Prix of the season returned to the National Volleyball Centre, with Teams eagerly awaiting this pre-Christmas duel. As expected, competition was fierce throughout the day. East London Lynx dominated Tier 1 and Battle Back B edged out Essex Pirates in Tier 2.
In Tier 1, East London Lynx showed the strength of their squad claiming straight set wins in all matches. Portsmouth came closest to taking a set off East London Lynx, losing 30-28 in the 2nd set of their match. The battle of the day however, was for 2nd place in Tier 1, with Battle Back A, Lincoln Imps and Newcastle Staffs all capable of beating each other on their day. Battle Back A beat Lincoln Imps 2-0. Then Newcastle Staffs beat Battle Back A 2-0, meaning that Lincoln Imps needed to beat Newcastle Staffs to remain in the battle for second place. In the tightest match of the day Newcastle Staffs narrowly beat Lincoln Imps 2-1 (23-25, 25-23, 15-13) giving Newcastle Staffs their highest Grand Prix Series finish. The results leave the battle for the Semi Finals very much up in the air.
In Tier 2, Battle Back B, Essex Pirates and Manchester Marvels all won 2 matches each. Manchester Marvels demonstrated improvement by claiming their first and second victories in the Grand Prix Series, edging Essex Pirates into third place on bonus points, with Battle Back B taking the top place also due to the bonus point system*. The deciding match of the day saw Essex Pirates take on Battle Back B for a place in Tier 1 next time round. Essex Pirates took the 1st set but Battle Back B fought back to win the 2nd and 3rd set taking the match 2-1 (23-25, 25-21, 15-12). DRM were missing some players through illness, but they battled on courageously and nearly beat the Tier 2 winners Battle Back B, losing by the closest of margins 2-1 (19-25, 25-14, 16-14).
The Sitting Grand Prix returns in 2015 on 25th January at the National Volleyball Centre.
