GB Sitting Volleyballers in action this weekend
24th May 2016
MEDWAY Park will play host to an international sitting volleyball competition this weekend, featuring the Great Britain women’s team.
They will face Paralympic qualifiers Canada and two allstar teams made up of the best English sitting volleyball players,
Ian Legrand, head coach for GB Women, said: “We’re really excited to be heading to Medway for this event.
“The competition will give us an opportunity to develop as a team and test ourselves against Paralympic qualifiers, Canada. The squad have been training hard since we went to the Pajulahti Games in Finland in January and I’m confident that we’ll demonstrate that progress on court.”
The Medway International will be held over three days from Friday 27 to Sunday 29 May, with each team playing five matches throughout the weekend.
The team from Canada are one of just eight teams to have qualified for the Rio Paralympic Games after finishing in third place at the Parapan Am Games behind world silver medallist USA and Paralympic host nation Brazil. They will be using the competition as vital preparation to their Paralympic campaign.
Ian Halliday head coach for the Canadian team said that the team were using the competition as an extension to their Rio2016 training camp and that they always looked forward to working with the GB team.
“We’re really excited to come over to Medway Park to focus in building the team and working on our tactics.
“It is a chance for us to give some of our newer athletes more experience and for us to experiment with some different line ups and rotations. We now really need to focus on our game strategies that we feel will give us the best chance of success in Rio.
“We are really excited to once again be working with the Great Britain sitting volleyball squad.”
Cllr Howard Doe, Medway Council’s deputy leader and housing and community services portfolio holder, said: “The development of Medway Park was conceived and built to provide a tangible legacy from the London 2012 Games.
“Four years on, it is fitting that the venue is playing host to the Women’s International Sitting Volleyball event in another Olympic and Paralympic year.
“I’m sure the sport enthusiasts of Medway will once again embrace the opportunity to see live, world-class sporting competition as part of our Celebration Rio Festival of Sport.”
The allstars teams will include both male and female sitting volleyball players, and a mix of disabled and ablebodied athletes.
There will also be Go Spike Big Weekend sessions taking place on Saturday and Sunday. These are for anyone who fancies giving sitting volleyball or outdoor volleyball a go. Prior experience is not necessary. Sitting volleyball is an inclusive sport which can be played by all the family, regardless of age and ability.
