Reigning Champions to Start the Season with New Head Coach

IBB Polonia London will be kicking off their 2016/17 Super 8 campaign with a new coach, as they look to replicate last year’s successful season.

Piotr Graban, 30 from Gdansk in Poland, has most recently worked as the assistant head coach for two-time Polish Women’s Champions PGE Atom Trefl Sopot and has a Master’s Degree in volleyball.

He succeeds Vangelis Koutouleas who has been appointed as head coach of the beach volleyball programme in Cyprus.

“Working with IBB Polonia London will be my first leadership role at this level in volleyball,” he said. “Using my experience as a coach in Poland, I can develop my style as their head coach.

“IBB Polonia London has given me a chance and I am very keen to make the most of it.”

Piotr will lead his team to their debut match in the CEV Challenge Cup later this year and is hopeful that his side can also retain their double title.

In April this year Polonia claimed their first National Cup in 25 years, adding the Super 8’s title to their trophy cabinet a month later. Their outing in the Challenge Cup this autumn will be the first time an English side has competed on the European scale.

“Everyone wants to win, to win everything in England and to accomplish something in Europe that an English team hasn’t achieved before, but it is not going to be easy,” he said, in an interview for the IBB Polonia website.

“A large portion of the team has been changed and I have arrived with my ideas and methods and have started to introduce different defensive and attacking systems.

“I’m very impressed with the skill set of the players and the effort that they put into each training session. At the moment, things are progressing very well and I am optimistic.”

Bartek Luszcz, chairman of IBB Polonia London, said: “I’m really happy that Piotr has joined us. We will be doing everything in our powers to ensure that the club can fulfil Piotr’s ambitions; as a result, we will develop even further.”

IBB Polonia London make their historic European debut against the eventual winners of the first round clash between Pokka A.E. KARAVA of Cyprus and Hungary’s Fino KAPOSVAR SE.
