23rd October 2016
Following a busy day one of first-round fixtures, the NEVZA Beach Volleyball Championships in Bournemouth reached the latter stages today, with semi-final places up for grabs in both the men’s and women’s competitions.
Top seeded Norwegian pairing, Berntsen/Sørum secured their semi-final spot with a 2-0 (23-21, 21-18) third-round victory over Finland’s Nurminen/Piippo. England’s top men’s pairing, Chris Gregory and Jake Sheaf also secured a place in the semis with a thrilling 2-0 (21-17, 21-16) victory over Bergerud/Solhaug of Norway.
In the women’s third round, England’s Jess Grimson and Vicky Palmer faced Sweden’s Nilsson/Yoken. Despite being seeded four places below the Swedes, England showed great quality with precise play to win the match 21-18, 21-17 (2-0).
Over on court one, top pairing Lahti/Parkkinen won their place in the next round with a clinical performance and 2-0 win against Kjølberg/Aas (21-16, 21-12).
The remaining semi-final places were to be won in the afternoon’s fifth-place knockout rounds.
Nurminen/Piippo showed quality to comfortably beat Sweden’s Frantzich/Tholse 2-0 (21-15, 21-10) and Appelgren/Annerstedt caused a slight upset to challenge and knock out second seeded Bergerud/Solhaug 2-0 (21-17, 23-21).
Having lost to Grimson/Palmer in the third round, Nilsson/Yoken needed to overcome Sweden’s Thurin/Thurin. Nilsson/Yoken narrowly won the first set 25-23 but struggled in the second set to allow Thurin/Thurin to level 21-14. The final set was a close encounter with some great volleyball on show, resulting in Thurin/Thurin progressing to a semi-final against Lahti/Parkkinen.
Another close affair, the final match of day two saw Lunde/Ulveseth of Norway beat their countrywomen Kjølberg/Aas 2-1 (21-16, 22-24, 18-16) for a match against England tomorrow.
