Marvel Players Make the Grade

For Steve Allen (Central Manchester) and Pete Hodge (Trafford), Saturday and Sunday 15th/16th October 2016 might well turn out to be monumental weekends in their sporting lives.

On the Saturday, both players attended a Sitting Volleyball development scouting session organised by Volleyball England, as part of the governing body’s plans to augment the standard of British Sitting Volleyball. From a five-minute fitness workout akin to the Bleep Test, to hours of ball and court drills, the two northwest hopefuls were rigorously put through their paces before being afforded the fantastic news that both players had been selected for the Great Britain Sitting Volleyball Development Squad!

For Steve Allen, the news might have come as more of a surprise, having only been training with Manchester Sitting Volleyball for four weeks; however, this fact only makes both his selection and the hard work he applied on Saturday more astonishing. With a keen sporting awareness, and a vibrant personality, Steve (34) should be considered one to watch over the coming weeks and months of his development. A highlight from the following day’s Grand Prix was a winning spike scored with the back of his right hand that looped over the opposition team and landed just within the court boundaries of the diagonally opposite corner. Precision!

Pete (30 and recently married) has been training with Manchester Sitting Volleyball for twelve months now, and has attended a host of sitting volleyball Grand Prix with his north-western club, gaining popularity among his team mates as well as demonstrating tremendous sporting abilities. From a serve both powerful and accurate (evidenced on Sunday when he won 13 points in a row for Manchester Sitting Volleyball in a single set) to the quick reactions necessary for movement and defensive play in this high-octane sport, Pete must be hopeful that his sitting volleyball future is indeed a bright one.
