Intense Battle for top spot at Sitting Grand Prix

The fifth Sitting Volleyball Grand Prix of the season took place at the National Volleyball Centre this Saturday and it was another day filled with great Sitting Volleyball.  Amongst those teams playing we welcomed back the University of York, for their 2nd experience following attending one Grand Prix last season.

In Tier 1, East London Lynx began the day against Lincoln Imps. East London Lynx's strength showed, a repetitive theme at this years Sitting Grand Prix competition, when they beat a battling Lincoln Imps side 2-0 (25-13, 25-10). The next match of the day saw Sheffield take on a battling South Hants side, Sheffield narrowly took the first set (26-24), however South Hants came fighting back in the second set and won this set (25-22). Strong hitting by Sheffield at the net saw them take the final set and the match 2-1 (26-24, 22-25, 15-8). Sheffield carried on their momentum gathered from their opening match victory to see off Lincoln Imps 2-0 (25-15, 25-17) in their next match. Filled with confidence after comfortably winning their first match East London Lynx were quickest to come out of the blocks and take the first set against South Hants, however South Hants came back fighting in the second set and made East London Lynx work hard for every single point, it was however, East London Lynx who eventually took the match 2-0 (25-10, 25-23). With both teams looking for a victory the next match was between South Hants and Lincoln Imps. The results from both teams previous matches indicated that this match would be really competitive and it certainly was a tight affair, South Hants just edged the first set (25-23), South Hants displayed excellent attacking play in the second to win the match 2-0 (25-23, 25-12) and maintain their place in Tier 1 for the next Sitting Grand Prix, however with Lincoln Imps finishing in 4th place in Tier 1 they will be relegated to Tier 2 for the next Sitting Grand Prix. The final game of the day between East London Lynx and Sheffield would decide who would win Tier 1.  East London Lynx started the match in the dominant fashion that they have shown all season, taking the first set comfortably (25-20).  In the 2nd set all was to play for and the score was point for point, Sheffield applied pressure late on in the set and East London Lynx surprisingly didn't seem to have the answer, as Sheffield took the set (25-20).  This meant that there was all to play for in the third and final set.  The set was intense as neither team wanted to concede ground, and late on in the set both teams had their chances to win the match.  It came down to some very strong attacking play from Sheffield which saw them edge the set and take the match, and top spot for the Grand Prix.

Tier 1 MVP’s – Richard Stacey-Chapman (South Hants)

Tier 2 was just as competitive as Tier 1 with some great some really entertaining games of Sitting Volleyball being played.

The first match saw Sitting Grand Prix regulars, Essex Pirates take on the University of York in what turned into a masterclass from Essex Pirates. The University of York struggled to counter Essex Pirates powerful hitting at the net. Essex Pirates ran our deserved winners 2-0 (25-8, 25-13). The next match in the Tier was between Manchester Marvels and Help4Heroes Phoenix A. Help4Heroes Phoenix A started off the match in great fashion taking the first set (25-13), the second set was a different story though with both teams going point for point in what was an exciting spectacle of Sitting Volleyball, however it was strong serving at the end of the set from Help4Heroes Phoenix A who managed to secure victory 2-0 (15-13, 29-27). With the matches coming thick and fast now, up next were Manchester Marvels and the University of York with both teams looking for their first victory of the day. Both teams improved from their opening matches however it was Manchester Marvels who were dominant throughout and took the match 2:0 (25-15, 25-13). The next match between Essex Pirates and Help4Heroes Phoenix A was the most competitive match of the day. Help4Heroes Phoenix A came back from 1 set down to win the match 2-1 (17-25, 25-22, 16-14) Essex Pirates took the first set 25-17, however Help4Heroes Phoenix A regrouped and came back  from 1 set down to win the match 2-1 (17-25, 25-22, 16-14). Help4Heroes Phoenix A went into their final match of the day knowing that a victory would see them win the Tier and get promoted to Tier 1 for the next Sitting Grand Prix. Just like they have done all day Help4Heroes Phoenix A were producing strong attacking play which caused the University of York all sorts of problems. Help4Heroes Phoenix A comfortably won the match 2-0 (25-10, 25-12) and with it top spot and promotion to Tier 1 at the next Grand Prix. The final match of the day saw Essex Pirates take on Manchester Marvels. The match started off going point for point until Essex Pirates gained a breakthrough and took the first set (25-22), Manchester Marvels came out of the blocks in the second set to gain a strong 7 point lead aided by good serving and faults from Essex Pirates before the first time out call, Manchester Marvels won the second set (25-15), Manchester Marvels strength shone through to take the final set and the match 2-1 (22-25, 25-15, 15-5).

Tier 2 MVP’s – Frank Aveh (Help4Heroes Phoenix A)
