Women Super 8s kicks off
9th October 2017
All the teams were in action as the Women’s Super 8s burst into life.
Even after just one weekend, the table has a familiar look to it as Team Durham, Team Northumbria and Polonia Side Out occupy the top three spots.
The current champions Durham surged to the league summit with straight sets victories over Tendring VC Ladies on Saturday and Pulsepoint London Orcas on Sunday.
Last year also saw Team Northumbria go the regular season unbeaten, only to lose to Durham in the playoffs. The Northumbrians nearly experienced their first league loss of the season in their opening game as Pulsepoint Orcas took them the distance. Northumbria look on course for a routine victory as they took 2-0 lead but Orcas fought back. They levelled the match 2-0 to force a decider. Northumbria has to use all their skills and resolve to force victory 16-14 in the final set.
Promoted side Oxford Students will know exactly how good the elite level is and they were defeated in three sets to Polonia. Oxford appeared a little overawed in the first set and lost it to 9. They fared better in the next two, losing to 20 and 16, and will look to build on the second set performance as they build for the season.
It was a similar story for fellow Super 8s new arrivals Birmingham Volleyball Club. The West Midlanders lost 3-0 to Team BU Wessex. After struggling in the first set which they lost to 11, they began to find their feet. Despite losing the next two they can take confidence from registering 21 and 22 points.
The Women’s Super 8s is back in action next weekend including a mouth-watering encounter between Team Durham and Polonia.
