Shield Finalists Confirmed
12th March 2018
Four teams have made the most of their second shot of reaching National Cup Finals weekend, by sealing their places in the Shield finals. The competitions for teams knocked out of the early stages of the National Cup, will see compelling finals for both genders.
Non-NVL team Polonia IMKA have put together a fairy-tale run to defeat higher level opposition and make the women’s Shield final, where they will face the highest ranked team in the competition, Sheffield Hallam. The ladies from the steel city are the leaders of the Women’s Division 1 and defeated DARKSTAR Derbyshire at the weekend to reach the showpiece final.
Polonia IMKA, who play in London’s women’s premier league, will be confident of causing an upset in the final as they defeated NVL Division 1 opposition in their semi-final, as they beat Team Essex Trinity in straight sets. It wasn’t the first time Polonia have overcome Division 1 opposition as they also beat New Forest Ladies in the competition’s earlier rounds.
The men’s Shield final will see London Aces battle Polska Przychodnia Intervolley Manchester for the trophy.
Polska Przychodnia saw their way past Stockport Volleyball Club (3-1) to make the final and continues their fine form this season which sees them currently top the Men’s Division 2 North.
London Aces lie just three places above them in the NVL pyramid, as they sit sixth in the Men’s Division 1. In their semi-final, the Aces comfortably downed Tendring VC Men, who are top of the Division 2 South, so the London side have experience of holding off the best sides from the third tier.
Both finals will take place on April 14 at the National Volleyball Centre in Kettering. The matches promise to be a blistering start to the weekend, with the men’s and women’s National Cup Finals following the Shield finals. Be there to watch by getting your tickets to the National Cup Finals here.
