Sheffield win Sitting Knockout Cup

Sheffield Volleyball Club won the Sitting Volleyball Knockout Cup at the weekend after a brilliant day of competition on Sunday.

With nine teams entering the cup, there was lots of action for all sides. The teams were randomly drawn into three groups of three teams. The teams which finished top of their groups went into a group to play out for the Cup, all the second placed teams played a round robin for the shield and the bottom teams for seventh place.

Having made it to the Sitting Volleyball Grand Prix Final, Sheffield VC are in great form this year and took that into the cup competition. Easing into the group which would play out for the Knockout Cup, the team from the steel city defeated Help for Heroes A in straight sets (25-16, 25-16) and managed to come from behind to take the cup from South Hants, who had also defeated Help for Heroes A.

In the match that decided the destination of the cup, it was South Hants who took the initiative, winning the first set 25-20. Sheffield are a class team though and responded brilliantly. They took the second set 25-18 to level the match. The deciding set was a tight affair but when Sheffield sensed victory they didn’t let it slip, taking the decider 15-11.

The Shield competition summed up the fantastic atmosphere in the Sitting Volleyball community. New teams and players who had never played the sport before we welcome to enter the competition. In their first ever competition, Loughborough Fusion won the Shield competition. They defeated Pink Panthers and Lincoln Imps to enjoy glory on their first outing.

Manchester Marvels took 7th from Essex Pirates and Help for Heroes B in the final group. The MVP awards went to Frank Aveh (Help for Heroes) and Amanda Pollard (Essex Pirates).

It was a great day of action as each team enjoyed four matches at the National Volleyball Centre in Kettering.

For Sitting Volleyball fans attention now turns to the Sitting Grand Prix Final on May 6, 2018 which sees Sheffield VC take on reigning champions East London Lynx.
