Volleyball Futures camp to lead way on player development

A volleyball camp over the Easter weekend will lead the way in developing how coaches nurture young talent. The event will also be the perfect opportunity for promising under 15 players to find out how to build their potential and what it takes to make it into the England youth squads.

The inaugural Volleyball Futures camp will take place on the bank holiday weekend of Friday April 19th – Monday 22nd April at the National Volleyball Centre, in Kettering. It’s the first event of the Volleyball Futures programme which aims to share expertise about how to best develop talented players.

Beginning with those closest to the England Talent Pathway, the camp will be for under 15 players who are part of the regional squads and the coaches of these squads. The players will get the chance to work with experts on the volleyball fundamentals, learn how to improve their physical capabilities, and have an insight into what it’s like to be an England athlete.

The Volleyball Futures camp will run alongside the England Cadet training camp, so the athletes and coaches will get chance to see first hand how teams in the Talent Pathway operate.

Coaches will work with leading experts to improve their knowledge of how to approach athlete development and how to improve players technically, tactically, physically and psychologically in practical and theoretical sessions.

“Volleyball Futures aims to provide support – for clubs at any level who are working with athletes with potential – about how to create the best environment to develop young players,” said Gillian Harrison, Volleyball England’s Technical and Talent Coordinator. “The aim of the programme is to spread expertise and knowledge about player development as far and wide in the volleyball community, as well as raising awareness of the England Talent Pathway and better preparing players to join the programme.”

“The Easter camp is a great opportunity for regional coaches and under 15 players from regional squads to gain practical experience of how to be the best they can be.”

The event will be a two-day camp for each gender. On the Friday 19th April and Saturday 20th April, three girls and one coach from each under 15 regional squad will have their camp. While three boys and one coach from each under 15 regional squad will take part in their camp on Sunday 21st April and Monday 22nd April.

There is only a limited number of places and regions have been contacted and asked to put forward the coaches and players they want to have this opportunity. If you’re part of an under 15 regional squad and are interested in attending the event, speak to your coaches or regional association.

As well as valuable advice, coaches and players will receive useful resources to take away including a training journal, Volleyball England Futures booklet, a t-shirt and the results of their athletes testing data, as well as get their meals provided during the camp.
