B2022 Courtside Assistants: West Midlands juniors apply now

Birmingham 2022 is looking for young people in the West Midlands to volunteer as Courtside Assistants for the beach volleyball competitions.

Birmingham 2022 is looking for young people, aged 14-17 in Birmingham and the West Midlands to volunteer as Courtside Assistants for the beach volleyball competitions at this year's Commonwealth Games. The beach volleyball competitions will be hosted at the Smithfield site in central Birmingham. 

Courtside Assistants will have two main duties: 

  • Ball Retrieving: Assist in the flow of matches by both ensuring the match balls are in the right place and provide effective delivery to the athletes on the field of play (FoP) during competition 

  • Sand Raking: Every break in play, rake the middle of the court to even the sand and smooth the sand around the lines to ensure balls decisions can be easily called.  

The role requires a good level of fitness and strength (raking sand is hard work), excellent concentration, sufficient hand eye coordination, knowledge of the rules of beach volleyball (or a willingness to learn), and the ability to follow play and understand referee decisions. 

This is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity for junior volleyball players and fans in the Birmingham and West Midlands area to volunteer at the beach volleyball competitions for the Commonwealth Games, being held in their city. 

 

Who can apply 

Volleyball Clubs, Schools and Youth groups within the Birmingham and West Midlands area are encouraged to apply. Applications can be made to bring either 6, 12 or 18 youth volunteers (with 1, 2 or 3 chaperones), who must be aged 14-17 on 1st January 2022. 

Courtside Assistants will be selected in groups of 6, and for every 6 Courtside Assistants there must be 1 named Volleyball England DBS checked chaperone, who must be able to attend every session with their group.

This application will be used to select groups in the case of more applications than spaces. So, take your time answering the questions and explaining why your organisation should be considered. 

Organisations can apply as a group of 6 (+1 adult), 12 (+2 adults) or 18 (+3 adults). Unfortunately, groups of any other size cannot be accepted. The person applying must be one of the named chaperones. If selected, this person will be required to coordinate all communications between B2022 and parents/guardians of the volunteers as well as attend all training sessions and shifts during games time in a chaperone role. They will also be responsible for the logistics of getting volunteers to venue and chaperoning them onsite during games time, if selected. 

Applications close at 9am on Monday 21st February 2022 and Lead Chaperones will be contacted on 1st March with the outcome of the applications.
