Crystal Palace to host Birmingham 2022 Selection Tournament

Crystal Palace to host Birmingham 2022 Selection Tournament

Deep Dish Crystal Palace will host the tournament to decide which beach volleyball stars will represent Team England at the Birmingham 2022 Commonwealth Games.

Located at the Crystal Palace National Sports Centre, Deep Dish is one of the country's best beach volleyball venues. It was created in 2013 using legacy sand from the London 2012 Olympics and Paralympics.

With six months to go until Birmingham 2022 " the biggest sporting event to be staged in the UK since London 2012 " the excitement is mounting, and the Selection Tournament will be a vital part of the pre-Games build-up for players and fans.

England's top five ranked men's and women's teams, as decided by UKBT rankings, will be joined by either a wildcard entry or the sixth ranked at this crucial competition between 25th " 29th May.

Unless a team is automatically selected for meeting the criteria, the tournament will decide which teams will lead the medal charge in front of a home crowd at the Games.

Mark Garcia-Kidd, Project Lead at Volleyball England, is working closely with Deep Dish on the event.

He said: "Crystal Palace is a fantastic venue for this event. It was the base for the Brazilian national teams in the build-up to London 2012 and has been a favoured venue on the UKBT since.

"With the facilities available at Crystal Palace, we will be able to have matches under the flood lights creating a fantastic atmosphere with the help of our volleyball community watching from the sides. I'm sure that with the partnership of Volleyball England and Deep Dish we will provide an event to remember."

Further details on the competition and wildcard entries can be found here. Birmingham 2022 begins on 28th July and ends on 8th August.
