NVL Newcomers 26-27 part three - Portsmouth United

The club arrives into the NVL as the only rookie side in their division, but have their sights set on further development and continued growth.

Their arrival to the national league comes after three seasons spent finishing in the top two of the Hampshire Volleyball Association tournaments, showcasing a strong presence at county level.

However, they decided that second place simply wouldn’t do for the South East Volleyball Association 2025 tournament, beating Guernsey in a fierce contest that went down to the wire - the deciding set going 15-13 the way of Portsmouth. 

The club’s consistent results are the product of a strong defence as well as a consistent attack - something players Gonzalo Bartayres and James Eastaugh bring to the squad. 

Gonzalo has developed significantly over the past two seasons as a middle blocker, providing a reliable defence with great timing as well as being able to read the game well and position himself where he needs to be. He plays a key role in PU’s defensive structure, keeping consistent and unwavering in the face of pressure.

James, as an outside hitter, compliments a stark defence with an equally strong attack. Portsmouth cite his ability to attack from both ends of the court, stability when receiving serves and, similarly to Gonzalo, the mentality required to perform at the national level.

Head coach Samir Belaiche believes their entry to the NVL is the next step in Portsmouth United’s natural development - “The club has reached a level where progression to national competition is both merited and necessary.”

“Entry into the NVL provides the appropriate platform to test our squad against higher standards, accelerate player development, and challenge the club technically and tactically.

Outside of the NVL, the club focuses on providing weekly volleyball sessions for all ages and abilities to allow more people in the local community to engage with the sport, as well as provide a feeder into their competitive programme.

Portsmouth’s hunger for competition extends beyond the indoor scene, as the club sees members take part in beach volleyball, not only to enjoy other disciplines of volleyball but to improve ball control and athleticism of its members.

“A central objective of PUVC is to create a clear performance pathway for athletes in the region. Competing in the NVL enhances the club’s ability to attract, retain, and develop talent,” said Samir.

“Our players now serve as positive role models for young people in the area, and participation at national level reinforces that pathway, offering aspirational goals for the next generation.”

Portsmouth United will kick off their campaign with matches against Cardiff Panthers and Worthing on 3rd October, before facing Wiltshire Mavericks a week after.
