New DBS requirements updated for Assistant Coaches from 1st September 

From 1st September, Assistant Coaches who undertake regulated activity with children will be required to hold an Enhanced DBS Check. 

This change aligns Assistant Coach requirements with other coaching roles and supports Volleyball England's ongoing commitment to creating safe, enjoyable and inclusive environments for all participants. 

What is changing? 

Previously, Assistant Coaches were required to hold a Basic DBS Check, but. from 1st September, Assistant Coaches who meet the regulated activity criteria will require an Enhanced DBS Check. 

There are no changes to the DBS requirements for other roles as listed on our Safeguarding Training Requirements document.  

What does this mean for existing Assistant Coaches? 

Volleyball England has now introduced a managed transition period for existing Assistant Coaches who already hold a valid Basic DBS Check. 

Coaches will not be required to immediately apply for a new Enhanced DBS Check. 

Instead, they may continue in their role until their current DBS reaches its renewal date. At that point, where the role meets the regulated activity criteria, they will move to an Enhanced DBS Check as part of the normal renewal process. 

What about applications already in progress? 

Assistant Coaches who submitted a DBS application before 1st September will continue through the current process. Their DBS will remain valid until renewal, when they will transition to the new requirement, where applicable.

Volleyball England also encourages all volunteers and coaches to register for the DBS Update Service when they receive their DBS certificate. The service is free for volunteers and can help streamline future renewals, reduce paperwork and support a smoother DBS process.
