Standing on the shoulders of Little Giants
22nd November 2019
Little Giants Volleyball Club have been successful for a number of years in bringing adult volleyball lovers to courts across London, including through their Copper Box tournaments and Glow In The Dark volleyball initiatives. This season, the club has set sights on the next generation, growing the game south of the Thames in innovative ways, including offering schools free volleyball trials.
“Volleyball is not a compulsory sport in schools, so many kids are not getting the opportunity to experience it. With our schools programme, we are looking to change that. We already run after school volleyball clubs across Wandsworth, Brixton and Clapham. But this year we are doing even more to introduce volleyball to new children and teens,” explains Cisel Ormanci, Little Giants young and energetic chairwoman, whose daily schedule revolves around volleyball.
Over 150 children train in Little Giants Juniors groups every week. The club is open to children of all ages and abilities. There are complete beginners, as well as England national team hopefuls. The U16 groups have progressed so rapidly that the club decided to enter teams into the national league.
“When players come in with zero experience and after some time, you see the progress and all the hard work paying off, it’s very rewarding,” Cisel says with a smile on her face. “It’s a non contact team sport where anyone and everyone can pick up or play at any age.”
Little Giants Juniors are currently offering schools in London a four week mini volleyball trial programme completely free of charge. It includes a weekly session with a qualified, experienced coach for up to 25 students. The training session can be delivered in the morning, lunch hour or after school.
“We are working with ten schools already. The response has been so positive. Many kids go from the weekly school session to attending our after school clubs and weekend groups as they become passionate about the game. We still have capacity to take more schools on board, and as an indoor sport, volleyball is perfect for the colder months,” she adds.
