England Head Coaches reflect on NEVZA U18 Tournament in Denmark
Both squads were young for the age group they were playing in and consequently seeking development rather than a high placing as their main priority.
But the men's team were also able to produce some encouraging results, not only beating eventual champions Denmark Red in their opening pool match, but also going on to claim overall bronze medals, beating Denmark White in their placement match.
Another source of encouragement for the men was that Urmston Grammar Outside Muhau Ngonda was selected in the tournament's Dream Team.

While the women had less success from a results point of view, finishing fifth, they had plenty of encouraging moments they can take on moving forwards.
"One of the most pleasing aspects of the tournament was the culture developing within this young group," said Men's Head Coach Ryan Murphy.
"We’ve worked hard as a coaching team to create an environment built around belonging, togetherness and a willingness to learn, with a real focus on consistency, concentration and controlling the controllables.
"Coming away with a bronze medal and beating eventual champions Denmark Red 3-1 was a fantastic reward for the athletes’ commitment to being ‘fearless, not reckless’ and their attitude to transition defence, block and service reception.

"There are still areas to develop, particularly sustaining performance across multiple matches, but this gives us a strong foundation to build upon.
"I’d also like to thank the clubs and coaches for their continued hard work, alongside the parents for their fantastic support.
"It was equally encouraging to hear how successful the recent Talent Zone trials were, highlighting the exciting potential coming through the England pathway."
Reflecting on the journey of the women's team, Head Coach Alex Chinery added: "The tournament was a valuable experience to see how our young group matched up against international competition 12 months out from our next European qualifier.

"Going into the tournament with a roster which in the main was a year younger than our opponents was always going to be a challenge, but our ability to grow throughout the event was impressive.
"We competed well against eventual winners Sweden and took a set off an Iceland team that is coming off the back of an appearance at EuroVolley U18 this last summer.
"This was an important landmark as we build towards the next round of European Qualifiers in October 2027."
Many of the players out in Denmark can now, back with their clubs, look forward to taking part in the second U18 Super Series of the season on Saturday 7th November at Loughborough University.
