Super 8s Finals Weekend - Round Up
16th April 2012
The National Volleyball Centre, Kettering played host to two days of action packed volleyball drama showcasing the best of the Super 8s and Sitting Grand Prix Finals.
A fantastic crowd gathered to witness the electric atmosphere and dramactic plays as England's top teams went head to head to in a bid to be crowned Champions and recognised as the best team in England. The weekend’s matches were streamed LIVE over the internet leaving family, friends and supporters who couldn’t make it on the day, tuning into the action and on the edge of their seats!
Saturday’s schedule saw the battle for the Sitting Volleyball Grand Prix Tier 1 and Tier 2 titles which showcased the remarkable progress British sitting volleyball has made. A thrilling five set Tier 1 Final featured 12 GB players and Dutch Paralympic medallist Sanne Bakker, who won bronze in Beijing. What promised to be an exciting game on paper did not disappoint!
In the afternoon it was the turn of the Super 8s Semi-Finals where Team Northumbria secured their place in the Final with an impressive performance that saw them come back to win 3-1 after dropping the first set. The men’s Semi-Final proved to be equally as enthralling when Polonia eventually cemented their place following a tough five setter that saw the teams trade point for point for much of the game.
On the final day of competition the highly anticipated Championship matches saw an epic game between Leeds Carnegie and Team Northumbria for the women’s title that saw Team Northumbria emerge triumphent, the final score 3-2. While in the men’s Championship game it was Leeds Carnegie who faced London Polonia and after the disappointment of narrowly missing out on the women’s Championship, coach Simon Loftus was keen to make sure lightning didn’t strike twice. His team sought revenge on the defending champions that denied them the title last year taking the Championship in style with a 3-0 victory. London Polonia will hope to immobilise Carnegie’s charge for the double when both teams face each other again at the National Cup Finals in just two weeks time in a bid to be crowned Men’s Cup Champions.
