Teams close in on Sitting Volleyball Grand Prix Semi Finals

In Tier 1, East London Lynx edged out Newcastle Staffs in a thrilling finale 2-1 (25-23, 23-25, 18-16) to end the Grand Prix in top spot.  Newcastle Staff were the first team to take a set off East London Lynx this season and the tense final set demonstrated that the Grand Prix winner is not a foregone conclusion.  In the other matches in Tier 1, Battle Back A gained victories over Lincoln Imps and Portsmouth Sharks.  While Lincoln Imps narrowly defeated Portsmouth 2-1 (25-16, 20-25, 15-10) in a closely fought battle.  The Tier 1 results mean that East London Lynx, Battle Back A, Newcastle Staffs and Lincoln Imps* have gained a spot in the Semi Finals, *providing that these Teams all compete in Grand Prix 5.  Unfortunately it does mean that the most improved Team from this Grand Prix are likely to miss out on a Semi Final spot, but Portsmouth can take heart from their recent performances and hopefully look towards creating an upset in the new Sitting Volleyball Cup¹.

In Tier 2, Essex Pirates dominated recording straight sets victories against their opponents, the Pirates will be buoyed by this result as it means that they will be promoted to Tier 1 for the next Grand Prix, where they will be looking to test themselves against the best Teams in the country.  Manchester Marvels continued the fine form they showed at the last Grand Prix recording wins against Battle Back B and Canterbury Wyverns.  Battle Back B finished 2nd in Tier 2, they had close fought games against all three opponents, and edged Canterbury Wyverns 2-1 (25-19, 21-25, 15-13) in one of the tightest matches of the day.  Battle Back B collected enough bonus points* throughout the day to secure 2nd spot.  Canterbury Wyverns were involved in some of the closest matches of the day, narrowly losing to both Battle Back B and Manchester Marvels, at the next Grand Prix they will be looking to turn these narrow losses into victories.

*in Tier 2, up to a maximum of 6 bonus points can be awarded per match for each disabled player that is on court for a completed rally.

Tier 1 MVP for the day was Joe Machin, Newcastle Staffs and Darrell Tring, Lincoln Imps.

Tier 2 MVP for the day was Danni Hampson-Carroll, Battle Back B.

Sitting Grand Prix 5 is on Sunday 15th February 2015 at the National Volleyball Centre.
