Battle intensifies at Sitting Grand Prix

The second Grand Prix of the season welcomed 9 Teams to the National Volleyball Centre, Kettering for what was a fantastic day of Sitting Volleyball.

Tier 1 of the competition included the top five teams from the last Grand Prix.  Defending champions, East London Lynx looked imperious as they once again secured top spot with emphatic victories against all of their opposition.  With Lynx setting their own pace the main talking point was over who would finish 2nd , with Newcastle Staffs fielding an understrength side there really was everything to play for.  Help4Heroes Phoenix A took the early initiative after a strong display against Staffs, but it was the last match of the day against Lincoln Imps which determined their fate.  In a closely fought match which could have gone either way Help4Heroes edge Imps 2-1 (27-25, 25-27, 15-10) in what could easily be described as the most entertaining match of the day.  It was a tough day for a spirited Portsmouth Team, they pushed both Staffs and Imps close and could have seen a different result, but it wasn’t to be for the Sharks who eventually finished 5th, and will therefore be in Tier 2 for the next Grand Prix.

Tier 1 MVP’s – Ed Dawson, Newcastle Staffs and Corrie Mapp, Help4Heroes Phoenix A.

In Tier 2, Manchester Marvels joined the Grand Prix for the first time this season and were eager to demonstrate to the other Teams that they meant business.  Marvels started the first match in slow fashion, but soon found their touch to power past a battling Help4Heroes Phoenix B with the final score 2-1 (13-25, 25-15, 15-7).  Help4Heroes Phoenix B showed their enduring spirit with all of their matches going the distance, after being beaten to the points in the first two matches, their determination shone through as they clinched their final match of the day against Wyverns 2-1 (23-25, 25-9, 15-6), Help4Heroes eventually finished 2nd in Tier 2 due to bonus points*.  Wyverns themselves had showed great resilience all day long, and despite being understrength put in some fine performances which on any other day would have seen them near the top of the Tier.  The deciding match of the Tier saw Essex Pirates and Manchester Marvels battle it out with the winner guaranteed promotion, in a highly anticipated match.  The Pirates fought hard but it was the Marvels who came out on top after dominating the 1st set and never letting up in the 2nd.  Manchester Marvels will be in Tier 1 for the first time at the next Sitting Grand Prix at the National Volleyball Centre, Kettering on Saturday 21st November 2015.

*in Tier 2, up to a maximum of 6 bonus points can be awarded per match for each disabled players that is on court for a completed rally.

Tier 2 MVP’s – Lamin Manneh, Manchester Marvels, Jockim Pierre, Help4Heroes Phoenix B, and Mike Sole, Wyverns.
