MVPs take Sitting Grand Prix 2 by storm

The second Sitting Volleyball Grand Prix of the season welcomed 7 Teams to the National Volleyball Centre, Kettering for an exciting days play. Amongst the teams were 2015-16 Sitting Volleyball Grand Prix MVP’s – (left to right in photo) Jess Dowdeswell - Essex Pirates, John Munro - East London Lynx, Lamin Manneh – Manchester Marvels. Jess, John and Lamin had another fantastic day showing the class of 2016-17 how it should be done.
In Tier 1, defending Champions, East London Lynx looked dominant from the start as they showed the newly promoted South Hants that they meant business, in a convincing 2-0 win. Lincoln started off the day with a win against Sheffield, after being beaten by their opponents in Grand Prix 1, a win which turned the tables and saw them regain ground in the race for the Semi Finals. The closest match of the day saw Sheffield edge South Hants in a thriller 2-1 (15-25, 25-21, 15-13). East London Lynx continued where they left off, with a 2-0 win over Lincoln, which set up an interesting final match for Lincoln. With only Lincoln to play, South Hants needed a win to give themselves a chance to stay in Tier 1. Despite battling hard, it was not to be for South Hants as they were narrowly beaten 2-0 (25-20, 25-16). Sheffield went into the final match with renewed spirits, having overcome South Hants to secure their place in Tier 1 for Grand Prix 2, however this was not enough to overcome an impressive East London Lynx side, who completed the day without dropping a set.

In Tier 2, Help4Heroes Phoenix A started the day in dominant fashion without dropping a set in their opeing matches against their opponents Essex Pirates and Manchester Marvels. Manchester Marvels improved as the day went on after losing out in their first match to Help4Heroes Phoenix A, they went on to beat Essex Pirates. Manchester Marvels continued to improve in the second round of matches as they took Help4Heroes Phoenix A to 3 sets demonstrating the improvement that they had made. The rematch between Manchester Marvels and Essex Pirates, was the Pirates opportunity to get some points on the board, but once again Marvels proved too strong as they won 2-0 (25-12, 25-23). The final match of the day saw runaway leaders Help4Heroes Phoenix A take on a spirited Essex Pirates, who in their final match had their best showing of the day, the match ended 2-0 (25-16, 25-22) to Help4Heroes Phoenix A, who will be promoted to Tier 1 for the next Grand Prix.
*in Tier 2, up to a maximum of 6 bonus points can be awarded per match for each disabled players that is on court for a completed rally.
