Adam Walker appointed to VE Board

Adam Walker has been appointed as Volleyball England's first independent chair as part of the governance reforms that were ratified at Saturday's Annual General Meeting (AGM).

Adam is a founder and managing partner of the Oaks consultancy, which specialises in business development strategy and has an impressive track record of working with organisations across the sports industry. Adam leads the strategic direction of Oaks and heads up their consultancy work with a particular emphasis on strategic problem solving, business planning, organisational and governance structures and the development of commercial partnerships.

Adam takes over from Keith Nicholls whose outstanding efforts as acting president of the organisation, during what has been an incredibly turbulent year, were formally recognised at the AGM.

In addition, it was confirmed that Janet Inman - who has been working as Volleyball England's interim Chief Executive Officer since late 2016 - will now see her role made permanent.

The appointment of an independent chair was one of the conditions laid down by Sport England in their code of governance. Over 95% of the votes cast at the AGM supported this change and the other governance reforms which were proposed alongside it.

Those other reforms included the appointment of three further independent directors, changes in the composition of the Board and changes to the expected tenure of Board directors. All the proposals were ratified with at least 75% approval in each instance.

As well as Adam Walker, two of the independent directors were unveiled. They are Ian Wall (with a Marketing and Commercial remit) and Clare Francis (Legal). A vacancy remains for the third directorship (for Financial and Business Development); the role will be advertised externally once more.

On the Executive Board, Jefferson Williams was elected unopposed as the Talent Director, as were Seyram Atubra (Insight and Research Director) and Simon Griffiths (PR and Communications Director). The Inclusion, Diversity and Human Resources Director role remains vacant.

Three Workstream Leads were also appointed. These were Carol Gordon (Technical), James Murphy (Competitions) and Steve Kerr (Children and Young People). The Coaching Workstream Lead remains vacant.

Volleyball England's financial situation was also discussed at depth during the AGM. In the absence of audited accounts but with a desire to be as transparent as possible about the current financial situation, a set of the most recent management accounts were presented to the membership.
