Sheffield crowned Sitting Volleyball champions!
27th April 2019
Sheffield Volleyball Club retained their Sitting Grand Prix title with victory in an epic five-set win over East London Lynx.
The final was a rematch of last year and it was a similar story with a close encounter that went to and fro. The first set was nip and tuck before the team from the steel city took the initiative. Lynx though produced a stunning comeback to save four set points and steal the opener 26-24.
If Sheffield were disappointed by losing the first set they didn't show it as they came thundering out of the blocks in the second. They stormed into a 13-4 lead and although Lynx did close the gap back, Sheffield ran out 25-18 winners to level it up.
Lynx regained the advantage by winning the third 25-20, before the momentum turned in a tense fourth set. Lynx looked set to take the title at 23-20 up in the fourth but Sheffield fought back and stole the set 26-24 with captain Kev Tann serving to level the match.
The deciding set could have gone either way with the teams trading points to 10-10. When it mattered most though, the reigning champions found another gear and powered over the line to take the fifth set 15-11.
So the rivalry proved as close as ever but it was Sheffield who made it two titles in a row. You certainly wouldn't bet against these two facing off again next year.
MVP was Sheffield's Justin Phillips.
