Leeds RGA crowned Women's Shield winners
28th April 2019
Leeds RGA VC captured the Women's Shield after defeating London Inter Women 3-1.
Coach Penny Speers's team enjoyed a great battle against the ladies from the capital and had to produce some fine volleyball to claim take the honours.
London Inter started well and looked like they were going to notch the first set as they held a lead throughout and at one stage were 22-19 to the good. Anna Llewellyn's service run saw Inter make a couple of errors and give Leeds a way back into the set. Captain Nicola Robson and Katie Beardsmore then came up with crucial points which saw Leeds overturn the deficit and win the first set 25-23.
London Inter Women didn't get deflated and were even better in the second set, gaining a lead and keeping Leeds at bay to win the set 25-19 and level the match.
In the third, Leeds gained the edge in the middle of the set with the Virag Farkas finding a way to score with a variety of precision and power. London Inter hauled them back in though and looked the most likely to take the set when they were 23-20 up. Leeds had been here before though and when Alessia Garnero forced a point after a long, hard-fought rally with the game locked at 23-23, there was renewed belief from Leeds. After a vital service error from their opponents, they took the third set 26-24 to lead the match 2-1.
The final set was another great battle with Leeds just keeping their noses in front on the scoring until late into the set. In the crucial points, Leeds kept ahead to gain two match points at 24-22 and while the first went begging, the second saw another Garnero spike too hot to handle and the Shield title was heading back to Yorkshire.
It was a brilliant battle between two evenly-matched teams with the difference coming down to a few crucial points when it mattered most.
The MVP award went to Leeds RGA VC's Alessia Garnero.
