GB Sitting Volleyball squad set for European Championships
12th July 2019
The Great Britain Women’s Sitting Volleyball team will be competing in the European Championships next week and the squad has been revealed.
Head coach Ian Legrand has selected ten players for the championships in Budapest, which is a potential route to qualify for the Tokyo 2020 Paralympic Games. The group has great experience with seven players who were in the London 2012 Paralympics squad, including Vicky Widdup who will captain the team.
Great Britain are in group B for the competition which will see them face off against Italy, Finland, world champions Russia and Ukraine in the competition, which begins on Monday 15th July. You can follow the action on the European Sitting Volleyball Championships website.
If they can win the European Championships, Great Britain would automatically qualify for next year’s Paralympics. The team have received UK Sport’s Aspiration Funding to back their bid to reach Tokyo 2020. While the team, which has had to be completely self-sufficient for the last few years, has been generously sponsored by Credit Suisse to support the programme and help the team compete on the international stage.
The squad warmed-up with competitions in the Netherlands and Norway, and have been regularly training. While the chances of winning the European Championships appear slim as they are competing against countries with established sitting volleyball programmes, returning to the international stage is a brilliant achievement for everyone involved. The team will look to make their mark and, most importantly, start to put Great Britain sitting volleyball back on the map.
