Top players battle out at first UKBT Grand Slam event

Last weekend saw the first instalment of the UKBT Grand Slam Series take place at Bridlington beach. The event, co-hosted by Active Coast, Skyball and UKBT, which is an elite level event, saw some of the UK and Europe’s top players battle it out for the title.

The women’s draw included the Commonwealth Games team of Vicky Palmer and Jessica Grimson and Scotland Continental Cup pair Katie Barbour and Catherine Smy amongst other top players from around the UK. Palmer/Grimson stormed their way into the final without dropping a set and faced the local team of Farkas/Vassillik. They wrapped up the game 2-0 (21-10, 21-13) and took the title.

The men’s event featured some household names including 2018 Champions Race winner Mark Garcia-Kidd who teamed up with Phil Smith. The pair who were seeded 1 were convincing in the early stages of the tournament and punched their ticket into the final. They faced the England/France pairing of Issa Batrane and Arnaud Loiseau. Both players currently competing on the FIVB World Tour for their countries. Batrane/Loiseau came out firing and took the game 2-0 (21-13, 22-20).

"The event was a huge success and a big thank you to all the volunteers, referees, players, organisers and spectators who made this a truly fantastic weekend and a great start to the Grand Slam Series!" says UKBT director Jake Sheaf.
