Batrane makes Grand Slam history on Beach Tour

Bournemouth once again saw the UKBT Championship come to town, hosted by Deep Dish Beach Volleyball. The event hosted a number of different level events including the 4* Plate Championships and the big one, the 5* Grand Slam Series Championships.

It was a sunny yet windy weekend and all players battled it out to claim the titles in their divisions. In the stacked men’s 5* competition Issa Batrane created history by not only taking home the title of UKBT Champion but also completing the triple and winning all 3 UKBT Grand Slams in 2019. Batrane, who paired up with Chris Gregory, overcame the Bello brothers in a thrilling final that saw Batrane/Gregory take the match 2-1. Pete Dyakiewicz and Aldo Rendon added to their trophy cabinet by winning the bronze medal against Phil Smith and Aden Tutton.

The women’s competition saw some fantastic performances especially from young guns Isabelle Tucker and Katie Keefe who made it through to the quarter finals. They were knocked out by the eventual winners and wild card pairing of Cecile Billiet and Julia Hödl. Cecile, a long standing player on the UKBT, drafted in Julia for this event and they fought their way to the gold medal, beating the consistent team of Aga Adamek and Giulia Rastelli. Scottish national team Mel Coutts and Lynne Beattie won the bronze by beating Eva Holt and Julia Tokarenko.
