South West Volleyball Association celebrates reaching 50!
11th November 2019
The South West Volleyball Association (SWVA) has been celebrating its 50th birthday!
This weekend saw celebrations of the organisation reaching the milestone and all the volleyball history the area has seen.
There was the annual veterans tournament and a 50th anniversary buffet event, with displays and mementos from the last five decades.
The SWVA have also been taking a trip down memory lane on their website by regularly delving into the photo archive with the SWVA at 50 gallery. You can check out photos from different decades on their website:
The next 20 years will be on the website soon.
The evening saw the presentation of the veteran tournament awards with Saga Louts – Torexe, who made in their third title in a row. The format is a fun handicap event which sees teams compete against the clock to maintain their points advantage or to overhaul before the hooter sounds.
50 years is a fantastic landmark and an important one to celebrate. The SWVA has delivered competitions since the 70’s and the area has produced some of the best teams in the country. The South West Championships which determine the best men’s and women’s team from the region, has run since 1970, while the leagues have been battled out since the early 70’s too.
You can see the full list of winners on the Competition Winners section of the SWVA website too.
It is ultimately the people who make the sport happen and SWVA has had a host of volunteers and volleyball enthusiasts over the decades who have helped volleyball thrive in the region. It is particularly special for the SWVA that there are people still involved who were original members of the organisation: Ron Richards is the secretary for the SWVA, while Roy Pankhurst holds the role of vice chairman.
From everyone at Volleyball England: Congratulations to the South West Volleyball Association on such a brilliant achievement. Here’s to the next 50 years!
