Volleyball England competitions for 2020/21 season cancelled
4th November 2020
The Board of Volleyball England has made the difficult decision to cancel the National Volleyball League as well as Junior Age-Group competitions for the 2020/21 season.
Should England’s four-week national lockdown expire on 2nd December, the country is expected to revert to the three-tier lockdown system for an undetermined period of time.
Under the rules of the three-tier lockdown system, adult indoor volleyball is restricted to the rule of six in MEDIUM tier areas and cannot take place in HIGH and VERY HIGH tier areas. Regardless of the area, 6v6 adult gameplay will not be possible. We also know that access to indoor playing spaces remains a major problem for many clubs.
Although juniors would be exempt and could still safely play 6v6 volleyball, the Board was concerned for the safety of members of the Volleyball Family travelling in or out of areas where the prevalence of Covid-19 was high.
With so much uncertainty hanging over amateur indoor sports, and the need for a suitable lead time to plan and organise these competitions, the Board was forced to make this heartbreaking decision.
Sue Storey, Chief Executive of Volleyball England, said: “It is with great sadness that we announce our National Volleyball League and Junior Age-Group competitions will not take place this year.
“Rest assured we will try everything possible to organise alternative competitions for adult and junior players, perhaps on a regional level, while continuing to support and encourage club activity.
“We’re in an extremely challenging period of time but we will not give up.”
Volleyball England previously announced that the National Cup, National Shield and Student Cup would not take place in 2020/21. This tough decision was made due to the late season start, the need to free up weekends for the NVL and the potential for complications caused by local lockdowns.
In regards to the Inter-Regional Championships, the rescheduled 2020 edition, which was originally due to take place in May 2020 and was set to be re-organised, will not go ahead. A decision has yet to be made on the 2021 Inter-Regional Championships.
