VOLLEYFIT: the expert instructors helping you get match fit
10th February 2021
It’s been one month since we launched VOLLEYFIT, our new fitness plan for members of Volleyball England. That’s one month of dedication and hard work. One month of progress. And one month closer to getting ready to return to court.
Now that we’ve settled into the programme, we thought it would be a good opportunity to tell you even more about the brains behind VOLLEYFIT – our expert instructors Alex Jenkins and Phil Spalding.
The voice of VOLLEYFIT: Alex Jenkins
Alex’s love for the game began as a teenager when he first picked up a volleyball at school. A sporty child with dreams of becoming the next Steven Gerrard, he found greater success in volleyball as a setter and just one year after taking up the sport, he was picked for the U17 England Cadets.
As he continued to develop at the National Volleyball Academy at Loughborough College, the inevitable happened as Alex was called up to the England national team, captaining the side on a number of occasions.
After graduating from Loughborough College, Alex continued his studies at Sheffield Hallam University, where he undertook a degree in sport and exercise science. During that time, he gained vital experience working with professional rugby union side Rotherham Titans and the GB diving team. A master’s in strength and conditioning at Northumbria University followed.
On the completion of his studies, Alex moved to Sweden to combine his two great passions – volleyball and S&C. Between 2016-2020 he was the coach, S&C coach and player at pro side Vingåkers Volleybollklubb. At the end of 2020 he joined league rivals Uppsala Volleyball and now also works as a personal trainer and S&C coach for a number of sports teams.

The face of VOLLEYFIT: Phil Spalding
Phil first came into contact with volleyball in 2019 when he studied the jump performance of amateur players as part of his S&C master’s at the University of Salford.
He was fully integrated into the Volleyball Family a year later when he was approached to create an S&C plan that the England U19 Juniors could complete at home during lockdown.
Phil has worked as an S&C coach in a variety of settings over the last decade. As the Head of Strength and Conditioning at Hereford Cathedral School, Phil set up an athletic development pathway and worked with talented athletes in such sports as taekwondo, modern pentathlon, gymnastics and trampolining at an amateur, semi-pro and professional level. During 2012/13 he also worked with junior players at Notts County FC, the oldest football club in the world, as a fitness coach.
In 2019, Phil set up his own company – PS Physical Conditioning – to deliver tailored fitness programmes for individuals in Worcestershire.
