Players emerge from lockdown stronger thanks to VOLLEYFIT

After 16 weeks, 14 workout videos and a fair few sweaty selfies, our volleyball fitness plan VOLLEYFIT has come to an end.

Launched during lockdown at the start of 2021, our new member programme has progressively prepared players to get back into match fit condition for the sport’s return with new content each week.

VOLLEYFIT got us up on our feet and keeping physically and mentally active during a time when volleyball was grounded.

It began with a session on coordination and finished today with power development, racking up more than 9,100 views across the volleyball and sitting volleyball programmes.

Members of Volleyball England, whether registered coaches, officials, national team athletes or members of affiliate clubs, received access to VOLLEYFIT as a new benefit for 2020/21.

And their feedback on this innovative new project was extremely encouraging. On YouTube, 98% of video reactions were positive. In a snap survey, members also described VOLLEYFIT as easy to follow with clear instructions and a good variety of exercises, giving the programme an average rating of 7.5 out of 10.

Thomas Graham-Jones, Libero for Sheffield Hallam and England Junior Men Beach Athlete, shared his VOLLEYFIT experience and progress through regular home workout videos throughout the programme.

He said: “I would say that VOLLEYFIT was a great idea to keep everyone active during lockdown. Knowing there were others taking part gave you that added sense of motivation too.

“My favourite part about the whole programme was how the plans were different every week and meant it was fresh and didn’t get boring.

“I would also say that this programme – and I think I speak for everyone who completed it – aided my return to volleyball due it being very orientated towards impact and reduction of injuries to the lower body.”

Rob Payne, Strategic Manager (An Ace Service) at Volleyball England, helped to launch the programme back in January. He added: “When circumstances prevented us from playing volleyball, VOLLEYFIT brought people together and kept them in engaged with the sport.

“We hope members thoroughly enjoyed the programme. It has been something new for Volleyball England, but it has been a great success and very rewarding to deliver.

“Well done to every single person who took part in the programme. I am delighted to see all that hard work has paid off for those who have been able to return to play.

“A massive thank you also to our instructors Mel Young, Phil Spalding and Alex Jenkins, VOLLEYFIT would not have been possible without you.”

Sharing expertise

Instructors Alex Jenkins, Phil Spalding and Mel Young shared their S&C expertise through demonstrations and in-video commentaries each week.

Alex Jenkins, S&C coach at UP Uppsala in Sweden, said: “My experience working on VOLLEYFIT has been fulfilling and educational.

“Working with Phil has taught me a thing or two as well as given me a different perspective to help my own practise. I hope it has been well received in the volleyball community and it was awesome to be able to give something back to volleyball in England. Good luck returning to play and play hard!”

Phil Spalding, S&C coach at PS Physical Conditioning, worked together with Alex on planning and delivering the 10-week volleyball programme. He added: “The work of the team behind VOLLEYFIT has been smooth, well planned and co-ordinated from the outset.

“Firstly, working with Alex Jenkins has been a hugely rewarding experience. Having never met before, our philosophies regarding training were well aligned and we were able to collaborate despite being in different countries. Without Alex’s expertise both as a player and S&C coach, this project would not have been as successful as it has been.

“To the team behind the scenes at Volleyball England, namely Stewart, Rob and Fiona. We owe you so much for putting in the hard work putting our ideas together into the slick weekly content you see today. I am hugely grateful.

“To the volleyball community, thank you so much for engaging with our project. We hope it has enabled you to continue training and regain performance level fitness just in time for the return of volleyball. Please continue to use the VOLLEYFIT framework in your warm-ups and remember myself and Alex are always available for questions.”

Mel Young, S&C coach at Amazon24 Fitness and also for the GB Men's Sitting Volleyball Team, planned, recorded, and provided the voiceover for the four-week VOLLEYFIT programme that was tailored to sitting volleyball.

She said: “It’s been a really rewarding experience creating a standalone sitting volleyball fitness plan as part of VOLLEYFIT. I hope members have found it useful as part of their return to play preparations and I look forward to seeing our sport return with a bang very soon.”

Members of Volleyball England will continue to have access to VOLLEYFIT for the remainder of the 2020/21 membership year. For more information, please check your emails or contact the team via
