Referee development webinar with Guy Bradbury

On Tuesday, 28th October, Volleyball England launched the 2025-26 annual CPD programme for referees with the first development webinar, attended by 65 registered referees. The session was led by Guy Bradbury, FIVB Rules of the Game Commission Expert and experienced referee coach and mentor

Guy delivered a thought-provoking presentation focused on enhancing referees’ ability to interpret in-game situations with greater nuance, rather than relying on rigid models.  

He emphasised the importance of adaptability and composure, encouraging referees to respond intuitively to the dynamic nature of each match. 

A central theme of the webinar was the concept of smooth refereeing, originally introduced by Sandy Steel (FIVB Rules of the Game Commission Member).  

This approach promotes fluid, instinctive officiating that aligns with the rhythm and personality of the game. 

Nick Heckford, Volleyball England Officials Working Group Lead, highlighted the balance between consistency and judgement: 

“Whilst referees are encouraged to be consistent with decisions relating to matters of fact and objective rules, there may be scenarios in which there is more subjectivity, where referees are required to use their judgement to manage the match.” 

Throughout the session, Guy used a variety of video examples to illustrate key points, helping referees recognise the unique character of each match.  

This perspective enables referees to tailor their approach, improving their ability to assess and respond to evolving situations on the court.
