History-making tournament for female referees at ACS Egham
The event brought together teams from all over the world, and, while the athletes delivered plenty of excitement on court, something truly special was happening on the sidelines too.
The idea was brought to life by Richard Burbage, who coordinated the referees for the tournament and saw the perfect opportunity to bring together a group of women who are passionate about officiating.
Over two full days, the septet not only ran the competition with confidence and professionalism, but also created a supportive space to share experiences, exchange ideas and offer feedback to one another.
The referees (pictured below) were Katarina Cepinova, Anna Justkowska, Hiroko Turner, Domitilla Di Stefano, Fiona Cotterill, Maddie Vararu and Silke Vereeken.

“What stood out most was the impact their presence had on the players and spectators,” said Cepinova (pictured top), Lead Ambassador for Her Call, a community of practice and support group for female referees who are registered with Volleyball England, who was part of the cohort.
“Seeing an all-female officiating crew in action, something that has never happened at this event before, sent a powerful message.
“It showed young athletes that refereeing is a real and exciting development pathway – and that women can lead from the stand just as strongly as they compete on the court.
“The tournament turned into more than matches and medals; it became a celebration of progress, visibility and the future of female leadership in volleyball.
“The atmosphere was upbeat, collaborative and full of pride. By the end of the weekend, the referees left feeling even more connected and encouraged, knowing they had played a part in inspiring the next generation.
“If this milestone is any indication, the future of female officiating in volleyball is bright, and this history making weekend at ACS Egham is just the beginning of many events like this to come.”
