Pitman and England take positives from tough Nations Cup campaign

Volleyball England’s Beach Performance Director Kirk Pitman says the players who contested the Nations Cup in Alanya, Turkey at the weekend can take several positives from the experience.

Although overall results did not go their way in tough pools, there were bright moments that he believes should ensure they remain upbeat.

The men’s team were represented by NEVZA Beach England 2025 winners Niko Gleed and Enrique Bello and Yorkshire teenagers Maks Makowski and Josh Cosgrove.

They won one match against Greece and lost the other, but the difference in sets went against them – and it was the same story in their clash with Norway – while both pairs went down 2-1 to France in competitive matches.

Kirsty Star and Katie Keefe and Alice Jagielska and Isabelle Tucker pulled on England vests for the women, who found things even more difficult, losing each of their matches against strong teams from Ukraine, Belgium and France, the latter in close games.

“The Nations Cup was an important opening chapter to the season competing against some of Europe’s strongest nations is exactly the environment our athletes need to be tested in,” said Pitman.

“The men’s programme showed real promise, with our top pair picking up some wins and our younger second pair gaining their first taste of senior international competition.

“For the women, it wasn’t the result we were looking for, but the learnings from this event will directly shape how they prepare and build towards Bridlington in June.

“The tournaments in Bridlington (NEVZA Beach England, Beach Pro Tour Futures and NEVZA Youth Championships) are an amazing opportunity to perform in front of their home crowd.”
