England pairs out to emulate the Bellos at the Commonwealth Youth Games 2023

England’s Commonwealth Youth Games 2023 Beach Volleyball pairings begin their bid for glory tomorrow (Saturday 5th August) determined to emulate the past success of Bello brothers, Javier and Joaquin.

The biggest stars of British Beach Volleyball – who have reached the Round of 16 of EuroBeachVolley in Vienna (at the time of writing) - clinched a gold medal when the Games were last held in the Bahamas in 2017.

With a past rep to protect, Rob Morgan and Peter Soczewka, along with Daisy Boardman and Alice Jagielska, are gearing up to do battle in Trinidad and Tobago optimistic they can match that achievement – or at the very least earn a medal of one colour or another.

The four players flew out earlier this week and have been busy training and aclimatising ahead of matches getting underway, with the opening ceremony to first follow today (Friday 4th August).

“I’m really looking forward to the experience and hopefully we can bring it home,” said Morgan.

“I have been training hard for the last seven years, and in the past year dedicated towards this tournament, at least five times a week, up and down the country.

“If we could stand on the podium I would be really proud and it would be worth all the training... it would be a very, very big achievement.

Morgan and Soczewka start with a match tomorrow against Canada at 11.40am (4.40pm UK time) and follow it with their other pool game against Rwanda on Sunday at 4.20m (9.20pm UK time).

But it is the women, Boardman and Jagielska, who get their bid in motion first as they take on Rwanda at 10am (3pm UK time), with a second match of the day following against Australia at 5.10pm (10.10pm).

Boardman said: “I’m feeling very grateful towards everything to do with the Games and it will be something great to tell people about in the future.

“Alice and I are really good friends and we’ve been playing together indoors for about two years now. Coming on to the beach, she’s been an easy person to communicate with, talk to and partner up with, so that was a good start to our bond and friendship together.

“I definitely think we can bring a medal home – I believe in us.”
