Paris Olympics in the sights of Bello brothers

Paris Olympics in the sights of Bello brothers

Brothers Javier and Joaquin Bello are excited to be in the running to make British Beach Volleyball history by becoming the first men’s pair to qualify for the Olympic Games.

The England pairing have rapidly risen up the rankings on the back of excellent results in the second half of 2023.

It has included a fifth place at EuroBeachVolley 2023 in Vienna, Austria as well as third, fourth and fifth place finishes at the respective Beach Pro Tour Challenger events in Goa, Nuvali and Haikou.

Now as 2024 gets underway, the London-based duo are bidding to further improve on their current FIVB Olympic ranking of 43 to clinch a place in Paris this summer.

Where the Bellos need to finish by the cut-off date of 10th June depends on a whole host of factors, as there are different routes to secure qualification and only two teams can qualify per nation.

But whatever is needed, they will have a maximum of 12 tournaments in which to do it, which restart in late February and early March.

“We have different levels of events all around the world and they all add up ranking points towards the Olympics – and that’s where we are fighting to get in,” Javier told BBC Radio 5 Live Olympics’ Path to Paris show.

“It’s (the Olympics) the ultimate goal for any athlete in every sport, but especially for us because it is so unexpected.

“A year ago we didn’t think it was possible – we thought this Olympic cycle might be a little bit too early for us – but we got a lot of good results towards the end of last season and, seeing as we now have a chance, we want to give ourselves that opportunity (to qualify).

“If we were to do it, it would be so special to have our dad there as well (as coach).

He always cries when we win matches... even when it’s not a really important match, he’s really emotional as his skin’s really in the game.

“I don’t know how he would react if we were to qualify for the Olympic Games, but someone would need to keep an eye on him were that to happen!”
