Second Club Welfare Officer Workshop discusses safer cultures within a club environment

Volleyball England has underlined its commitment to keeping children safe in sport by hosting a second Club Welfare Officer (CWO) Workshop.

The online session held on Wednesday evening, saw 30 attendees from clubs from across the country.

The theme for the session was around the role and responsibility of a club welfare officer and allowed for discussion about safer cultures within a club environment and an opportunity for CWOs to feel support. A recording is available on Volleyball England Learning for those who are interested in watching it back.

It builds on the first Club Welfare Officer Workshop held in September of last year, which discussed supporting the move from safeguarding compliance to fostering a more inclusive safeguarding culture.

“Behind every safe and thriving club is a welfare officer who shows up, speaks up, and makes a difference. The workshop delivered isn’t just training — it’s their toolkit for creating a culture where well-being comes first.” said Laura Allcoat Volleyball England’s Strategic Manager for Safeguarding and Membership.

“It was positive to see several CWOs joining the workshop and being able to provide a safe environment for them to feel supported in their role.”

The workshop is part of several Volleyball England initiatives during Keep Your Child Safe in Sport Week 2025, that began on Monday and finishes today (6th October to 12th October).

The organisation has also produced social media posts providing advice and guidance for parents, links to useful videos, case studies from parents of young volleyball players and the chance to attend a CPSU Webinar on Positive Parent Culture.
