Tribute: Andy Worrall

Tribute: Andy Worrall

Volleyball England has been sad to learn of the passing of hugely-respected volleyball official and administrator Andy Worrall following a battle with cancer.

Andy began playing in 1990 for Swanley in Kent but broke a knee in a car accident and so at that point moved into refereeing.

By 1993, he was refereeing both indoors and on the beach and, after moving to Chipping Sodbury in 1995, was a regular referee in the South West League and NVL and on the Beach Tour.

He enjoyed the relationships and camaraderie when on the beach in particular, and made many friends in the process.

Working at the Olympics in London (2012) and the Commonwealth Games in Birmingham (2022) were huge highlights for him, where he trained courtside staff and officials and ensured everything ran smoothly.

Away from volleyball, he worked as a civil servant all his life before retiring in 2011 and also trained to be a magistrate, working for 20 years in the Adult and Family Court.

He enjoyed relaxing through his love for travel, visiting New Zealand, Canada, Iceland, California in the USA, China and many other places.

He leaves wife Carol, children Toni and Graeme and six grandchildren.

Volleyball commentator and MC Mark Perkins knew Andy for more than 20 years as a referee and from behind the scenes at London 2012 and Birmingham 2022.

“Andy was one of those unsung heroes, never one for the limelight, and would always do anything needed to help the event be a success,” said Mark.

“He was one of the most genuine and kind-hearted people I have had the pleasure to meet, always putting others before himself.

“He always had a smile on his face, and it was a pleasure to be in his company. He put his heart and soul into everything he did and, above all else, he was a true gentleman.”
