Tribute: Maciej Chodzko-Zajko

Volleyball England has been saddened to learn of the passing of highly-respected official and administrator Maciej Chodzko-Zajko.

Starting his refereeing career in 1987 at the age of 33, he quickly became involved with World ParaVolley, supporting events in the UK.

He became an International Referee and remained so until the European Championships in Elblag in 2009.

Maciej (pictured above, third from left) seamlessly moved to sport administration and was a Technical Delegate within Europe from 2009 to 2017. He was also a Jury Member for the 2010 World Championships in the USA and the 2012 Paralympic Games.

From 2009 to 2015, Maciej was a Team Leader of World ParaVolley Technical Commission and Sport Director for ECVD/ PVE as well as a Senior Staff Member and Tutor.

Paying tribute, Volleyball England’s Officials Working Group Lead, Nick Heckford, said: “In these roles, Maciej was an outstanding ambassador for Paravolley and he rightly received a Distinguished Service Award from World Paravolley in 2022.

Maciej was a National Grade referee in England and a member of the Referee Commission for many years, who played a large part in the development of many referees, including myself, both in London and within the National Volleyball League.

I greatly respected his advice and support and always looked forward to being nominated with him.

Volleyball England would like to extend its deepest condolences to Maciej’s family and friends at this difficult time.
