It is with great sadness we announce the passing of Vangelis Koutouleas. He died peacefully on Saturday 16th July aged 56.
After a successful playing career, Vangelis turned his hand to coaching and eventually moved from his homeland Greece to the UK in 2009.
Over the years he established a reputation as one of the most well-respected and knowledgeable beach volleyball coaches in the country, taking on Head Coach responsibilities within the national team setup and becoming an FIVB beach volleyball instructor.
He was also a talented volleyball coach and boasted many national accolades and achievements in both disciplines. As the Head Coach of IBB Polonia London he won national titles, helped establish the Pro Volley Academy and made history with the club in the Champions League. Most recently he helped Bournemouth University seal the Student Cup double.
Despite being one of the finest coaches in the country and working with elite and international athletes, he was always committed to coaching local players and teams.
Vangelis, along with Alex Chevau and Mark Kontopoulos, founded SideOut Beach Volleyball Club in 2011.
Andy Jones, National Team Manager at Volleyball England, previously worked with Vangelis in the national team and was a close friend. He said: "I cannot believe we have lost Vangelis, a fantastic coach, gentleman and friend who has had a profound impact on the game in England and abroad.
"Our condolences to his family and wide network of friends. His legacy will live on through the many players and coaches he touched, from recreational right through to elite level. Vangelis will be sorely missed."
